Self Colour Steel – Unpainted Structural Steel, Primed Steel

Self colour steel, also referred to as untreated or unpainted steel, is delivered in its natural state without any protective coating or surface treatment after fabrication. This type of steel, unlike galvanised steel, is particularly vulnerable to oxidation, which means that exposure to moisture and environmental elements can lead to rust and corrosion over time.

To maintain its durability and prolong its lifespan, we strongly recommend that a suitable protective coating be applied before installation. While we can supply self colour steel to meet your project needs, for long-term protection, requesting your steel to be professionally primed and painted before delivery is advisable. Alternatively, you can choose to purchase a suitable steel primer and apply it yourself prior to installing the steelwork on-site.

Taking steps to protect your structural steel, especially self colour steel, against corrosion before installation will help preserve its condition, enhance durability, and reduce future maintenance requirements.

Primed Steel – Corrosion-Resistant Structural Steel

Primed steel is structural steel that has been treated with a protective coating to help prevent rust and corrosion. The priming process involves applying a high-quality zinc phosphate primer, which creates a corrosion-resistant barrier between the steel surface and environmental elements. Additionally, while galvanised steel is another popular choice for corrosion protection, primed steel offers unique benefits suited for various projects.

Our steelwork is professionally spray-painted to achieve a consistent and even coating, typically applied at a thickness of 100–150 microns, depending on the project specification and the required level of protection. Unlike self colour steel, which comes without a protective finish, our primed steel ensures enhanced durability.

This protective primer helps reduce oxidation, improve durability, and maintain the condition of the steel during storage, transportation, and installation.

We recommend primed steel for projects where additional corrosion protection is required before installation. For long-term performance, particularly in exposed or demanding environments, a suitable finishing coat may also be necessary.

Our primed structural steel offers a practical, cost-effective solution for protecting steelwork against rust while ensuring it arrives on site prepared for installation.

Galvanised Steel – Long-Lasting Corrosion Protection

Galvanised steel is a form of structural steel that has been coated with a protective layer of zinc, providing outstanding resistance against rust and corrosion. This coating process, known as hot-dip galvanising, involves immersing fabricated steelwork into a bath of molten zinc, which creates a durable protective layer that bonds securely to the steel surface.

The process of galvanising is especially vital for structural steel used in external, damp, or moisture-prone environments. It serves as the ideal solution for outdoor steelwork, exposed structural beams, and even self colour steel installed within cavity walls or other areas where condensation and moisture may pose a risk.

The protective zinc coating acts as a formidable barrier against harsh environmental conditions, effectively preventing corrosion while significantly extending the lifespan of the steel.

Depending on various factors such as location, environmental conditions, and the thickness of the zinc coating, hot-dip galvanised steel can provide corrosion protection for 60 years or more. This makes it a trusted, low-maintenance solution for both residential and commercial construction projects.

We highly recommend using galvanised steel for any project where structural steelwork may be exposed to moisture, ensuring long-term durability and superior protection against corrosion.

Our hot-dip galvanised structural steel not only offers exceptional rust resistance but also reduces maintenance costs while providing long-lasting protection for steel beams and structural steelwork. Primed Steel
